Chile 88: The digital archive and contemporary politics
Chile 88: The digital archive and contemporary politics
In this webinar, Jennifer Ashley examines the ongoing political relevance of a digital archive she created to document Chile's 1988 vote to return to democracy. She explores multiple ways in which activism intersects with the creation and use of digital archives. Dr. Ashley explains how archivists/record-keeper make decisions about what is (and is not) kept, how to display preserved material, and how to provide to the public with context for interpreting that material. Digital archives include the creation and incorporation of new materials, such as oral histories, often diversifying the digital domain, and complicating existing representations of historical events. She will discuss how she shares material from this archive through social media platforms and how the conversation around that material has evolved over time in response to the political debates of the moment.
